Notice to all users of the Holodeck:

There are safety protocols in place that cannot be deactivated without the approval of two commanding officers or the captain to protect users of the Holodeck from potential harm. However, every time the Holodeck is ever used in a nontrivial manner, no matter what the safety protocols say, the Holodeck turns into a deathtrap.

Unless you believe yourself to be adept at constructing a forcefield from your communicator and 19th century Earth tools, or you're at the very least not wearing a red shirt, you are strongly advised not to attempt to use the Holodeck until a designer comes up with a safety protocol that doesn't kill you whenever somebody looks at it funny. Even when you're not on the holodeck. Or in the same quadrant. Or time period.

In fact, if you are wearing a red shirt, Starfleet may not be the job for you

I'm alive!!!

Talk about pathetic! I haven't even looked at the blog in about a week! I have just been so busy with other things it never occurred to me to write anything.

I've been programming a Sudoku game for my UI Design class, which looks rather fancy, if I do say so myself. It's been eating up a lot of my time because I'd rather work on it than any of the other things I have to do, so whenever I can't think of anything to do, I just start working on Sudoku again, and leave my homework for another day.

Then I just had to go and reinstall my graphics drivers again. Yes, I know, re again same sentence == redundant, but it really is about the fifteenth time I've done it on this computer. Admittedly, these were new drivers, but it's a good thing, because the old one just stopped working all of a sudden.

It feels like everything is coming up so quickly this semester. It's already only two weeks until the end of classes. How did that happen!? In some sense, I'm glad, because I don't have to sit through my boring classes any more (cf. almost all of them) but that also means I have final projects due in many of my classes (cf. almost all of them... but not the same set). I'm only thankful that my rough draft of my eight-page paper was satisfactory for a final so I don't have to go edit that and submit another one of those. I just have to write a twenty-page portfolio and give a ten-minute pitch for my play which I am sooo not ready for, finish this damn Sudoku game, write a networked white-board application, and live.

Wish me luck.

French is Fun

We're releasing the product today or it's Willy the Mail Boy's head on a silver platter. So I'm doing some final testing on a foreign OS so that we can be sure it works.

It's odd navigating around in French Windows (Bah Dum Psh!) and to actually already know what I'm doing. Text? Who needs stinkin' text. I navigate by muscle memory of where that item was in the list the last eighty times I clicked on it.

But that's not what I came here to talk about. I came here to talk about a French keyboard layout. First of all, 2 in French is apparently é. Second, if you want to try typing my username ("martys") on a French keyboard, go ahead. You'll end up with ",qrtys". But my favorite is the French throwback to the old "Interactive Fiction" text adventures of yore when trying to enter the default workgroup. Because when I typed in Workgroup, it came out zorkgroup.

You can get some pretty amusing stuff if you're not paying attention.

The phantom input

So, I hooked up my brother's PS3 controller to my computer, and got it working. It's pretty nifty stuff. It works with all of my games and everything, just like a regular, frickin' awesome controller.

One thing I noticed, though, is that when I go to calibrate the controller, it shows 19 button inputs. Now, with most "standard" controllers having only 4 buttons, that may seem like a lot, but if you count, you've got L1, L2, L3, R1, R2, R3, Square, Circle, Triangle, X, Up, Down, Left, Right, Start, Select, and the PlayStation button. For those of you counting along, that's 17 buttons. Where are the other two? I've looked everywhere for these phantom inputs to no avail, short of opening up the controller with a screwdriver. So it says there are 19 inputs, but only 17 buttons are actually present on the controller. I wonder if this is a remnant from additional buttons that were removed, or what's going on, but suffice it to say, these two anti-buttons have my curiosity piqued.

I shall report later if I ever do find out what they are for. In the meantime, I've got some awesome gaming to do.

Who needs games?

Who needs real video games when you can find just as much entertainment?from those selfsame same companies that provide those video games?for free? Why, just look at the online FAQ for Sony's Station:

Q: How do I say 'You spoony bard!' in the language of my choice?

Early Childhood

More on the ESRB today. I find this stuff terribly interesting, and funny. If you'll recall from yesterday, (or just look down), you'll remember that of all the Adult-Only games, 21 of them were sexually suggestive. Keep that in mind.

The ESRB has rated 13498 games as of this posting, with ratings from Early Childhood to Adults Only. Content types describe why a game is given a particular rating. Each of these content types falls under a particular heading. For example, "Nudity" falls under the "Sexuality" heading, and "Blood and gore" falls under the "Violence" heading.

There is a "Miscellaneous" heading which contains things not suitable for any of the standard headings. One of these that parents of particularly young children will want to watch out for is "Some Adult Assistance May Be Needed". First of all, who leaves their baby in front of a computer alone? Second of all, the ESRB is supposed to be warning me about the dangers of this game, and all the objectionable content found within. How is "Adult Assistance" objectionable, unless you're so simultaneously busy and poor that you use a computer instead of a babysitter?

Now the funny bit. There have been 21 games rated with this "Adult Assistance" content type. That's the same number of games that have been rated with the "Sexuality" heading in the "Adults Only" section. Coincidence? Dear god, I hope so.

Let's hope at least some guy at GameStop doesn't get "Pink Panther's Magical Island" mixed up with "Snow Drop". Can you guess which one is rated AO and which one is EC without looking?

Following is a list of some of the games that are actually on the lists. See if you can properly sort them into the correct categories (EC and AO only):

  • Lula 3D
  • My Little Pony
  • Just Me and my Mom
  • The Adventures of King Dengotti
  • Singles
  • Tokimeki Checkin!
  • The Adventures of Busy Billy
  • Snow Drop
  • Just Me & My Dad
  • Riana Rouge
  • Pink Panther's Magic Island
  • Stickybear
  • Crystal Fantasy
  • Bug Explorers

I guarantee you will get at least one wrong.
